Short Cuts in Cebuano

Postby thomasse83 » Fri Mar 27, 2009 2:39 pm

There are many ways to same the same thing in Cebuano but normally the Filipinos have a certain way they say things depending on the island you are on.
For instance on Bohol when they ask you "Where have you been?" they say "Dis a mo?” But on Negros they may say "Diin mo gikan" which means the same thing so it all depends on which island you are going to.

But as general rule, Negros speaks the language more slowly and completely. Cebu speaks it faster with more short cuts and Bohol has the most shortcuts and speaks the fastest. When I was first on Bohol it sounded like someone was speaking on fast forward whenever I would talk to them. :) I am not sure about Mindanao as I have never been there.

This section will be for anyone who wishes to know the faster way of saying things. Just ask how to say it and I will let you know the easiest and fastest way. But please let me know which island you plan on going to as that can sometimes affect the best way to say something.

Hi Spencer (thomasse83),

Thanks for your input regarding the different ways that the cebuano dialect/language can be expressed.

Yes, I agree with you that in the Philippines, cebuano or the visayan dialect are spoken differently by different inhabitants of the archipelago (especially in the visayas region). This is so because these islands are inhabited by different tribes during the very early times. This later on evolved as what we can readily observed now as you travel to Bohol, Cebu, Leyte, and Negros and the like.

Thank you for sharing your ideas and for encouraging other people to post their questions on this forum. We would be glad to hear from you and from your friends regarding the Philippines.

By the way, one of the best place to go to the Island of Mindanao is Davao City. Foreigners are very welcome there, and its safe too. Why don't you try visiting the place?
